The City Council’s Building & Licenses Committee has requested the Planning Commission to review the issue of short-term rentals in order to determine if short-term rentals should be expanded to other parts of the City.

The City of Ludington Zoning Ordinance (Section 500.19, Transient Rentals of a dwelling), permits rentals by the day, week or similar periods of less than twenty-eight (28) days only in a hotel or motel or in a condominium unit that has been approved as part of a Planned Unit Development or as a Special Land Use when specifically requested as part of the application.  Condominium units that have been approved as a short-term rental are required to register the unit as part of the City’s Rental Inspection program.

The proposed new development on a vacant parcel of land between Harbor View Marina and the Lake Michigan Carferry property calls for the construction of 16 single-family residential condominiums.  The short-term rental of these condominiums would be permitted if it was approved as part of their Waterfront Planned Unit Development.
